FRIDAY 13 MAY, 19:45, THE RECREATION AREA

Molly let herself through the security gate into the recreation area. Ladylove was right. The air was filled with crackling tension. A few women sat reading, some playing cards, while others talked in whispers by the ping-pong table. Despite the appearance of normality, there was a palpable sense of impending violence in the room.

‘Alright, girls?’ Molly said to a few ladies working on a jigsaw puzzle. They looked up and nodded, but didn’t speak, their eyes giving away an inner disquiet which was best unspoken.

Moving on, Molly approached a young woman reading a battered paperback.

‘Are you okay, Sophie?’ she asked. The woman looked up and shrugged, before raising the book to cut off her line of sight.

Officer Ladylove prowled the room, her nightstick gripped tightly in her hand as she eyed the women with suspicion. Beckoning her over, Molly spoke to her a in a calm whisper.

‘Relax, Ladylove. You’re more likely to start something the way you’re acting. Put the baton away and try talking to the prisoners. Who knows? They might tell you what’s going on.’

‘Fuck that,’ Ladylove spat. ‘When these bitches kick off, I want to be ready.’

On one side of the recreation space, Big Bertha stood with Stitches and their little gang of ne’er-do-wells. Opposite them, Mama Sugden was surrounded by her posse of underlings. Between the two, and exuding a level of unpleasant cockiness, Wowzers sat with Flange, the pair of them grinning like the cats who got the cream.

The only people in the recreation area who seemed unaffected by the impending doom were Mavis, Doris and Gloria. The three old-timers sat chatting happily. As Molly approached, Mavis turned and said, ‘Miss, do you think if we put in a request for a five-gallon polycarbonate tub, the Governor would grant it? It’s for arts and crafts, you know.’

‘I doubt it,’ Molly said with a smile. ‘And whatever you’re planning, forget it.’

As the women laughed, Molly squatted down next to them.

‘It’s a bit tense tonight,’ she said, trying to make it seem like small talk. ‘Any idea what’s going on?’

‘Not a clue,’ Gloria said. ‘Maybe some of the girls are on the blob. You know how it is; when they’re all crammed in together, their cycles tend to synchronise.’

‘I think it’s a bit more than that,’ Molly said, but before she could continue, a movement in the room caught her eye.

Septic Susan marched across the space, a large saucepan in her hands. Molly had never seen Susan move so fast. Usually, she dawdled at a painfully slow pace, but now her strides were long and purposeful. What really was shocking was how different she looked. Her face, usually swollen with infected boils and tumours, seemed thin and skeletal. The protuberances which dotted her face were gone, the pus-filled swellings topped with yellowing scabs and seeping greenish crusts were empty, just loose skin with droplets of crimson blood and yellow slime.

Unsure what to think, Molly was transfixed as the cook reached the three women.
